Visit to the Ikeda Elementary School 2012

July 2, 2012

1.  Arrival 到校
We arrive at the Ikeda Elementary School around 8:20 in the morning, in time to be part of the stream of students entering the beautiful school campus.

Students change into their indoor shoes when they enter the school building.
We are offered guest slippers to wear and told to put our shoes in a bag.

2. Morning Ceremony 朝會
After students are settled in, morning ceremony begins.
Principal Sasaki gives a speech and presents honor awards to students.

3. Offering of flowers 獻花
In 2001, a former janitor with mental disorder entered the Ikeda school ground and began stabbing numerous school children and teachers with a kitchen knife. He killed eight children and seriously wounded thirteen other children and two teachers.  This tragedy has caused the school to tighten its security and adopt numerous measures to protect its students and teachers.  A monument is erected to commemorate the event.
After the morning ceremony, we are led to the monument to offer flowers to the victims.
This is a ritual that is observed by all visitors to the school.

4. Welcome Ceremony
The whole school gathers at the assmebly hall to give us a warm welcome.
The principals and student representatives of both schools give short speeches.

    Then it's performance time.

The Ikeda students give an amazing Taiko Drum Performance.
Next, the whole school sings "The Only Flower in the World", first in English and then in Chinese.

Then it's our students' turn.

Although our children are a little tired after the long journey yesterday and short sleep hours, they try their best to give our Japanese friends a glimp of our cultural diversity.

First to go on stage is the music group.
The beautiful score Reminisce they perform was composed by our own local Hualien music composer Mr. Kuo Tze-Jio some 70 years ago.

The dance group does a traditional Hakka dance.
Hakka is one of the four major ethnic groups in Hualien.  (The other three are the South-Min,  the Aborigines, and the mainlanders).  In the old days, Hakka people were often seen working in the fields or tea hills, wearing bamboo hats and humming traditional Hakka folk songs.
After the dance, we ask the interpreter to tell our Ikeda friends that we are going to leave the beautiful bamboo hats as souvenirs.  An impromptu hat-giving ceremony ensues.   The Ikeda students happily put on the hats and pose for pictures with our students.

The diabolo group performs to the famous Taiwanese pop singer Wu-Bai's "You Are My Flowers".
The intricate movements and creativity of our students delight the audience.

After the singing of school songs, the welcome ceremony comes to an end.

5. Communication Program
The three 6th grade classes of the Ikeda Elementary school are the hosts to our students.
The 40 students in each class are divided into 7groups.  Each group plays host to two of our students.

     First, they exchange namecards.

Then they participate in three fun activities together.

  • They have gym class together.

  • They make takoyaki together.

  • And they explore the campus and learn about campus safety together.

6. Lunch  午餐
Lunch time. The Ikeda students change into eating attire, with white cap and robe and a mask.
Before eating, everyone puts his/her hands together and says a little chant: "sen-se, minasan, itadakimasu." (Teacher, everyone, let's eat.)
Today's menu includes beef and vegetable curry, flat olive bread, milk, and yogurt. Simple but delicious and very nutritious.

After the meal, students put away their dishes and begin their cleaning chores.

7. Farewell Ceremony
Finally, it's time to leave.  Student representatives from both schools give a short farewell speech.
Group photos are taken.   And then we say good-bye to our friends at the Ikeda Elementary School .
Though we've been here for only a very short time, your hospitality has really warmed our hearts.
We look forward to seeing you again when you visit us in November.  Sayo-nara and take care!
